Ketika kita mendengar kata filsafat mungkin yang terbayang dalam benak atau pikiran kita adalah sesuatu yang rumit, “terlalu dalam”, sesuatu yang mendasar, sangat menantang. Mungkin karena itu pikiran kita ingin berlari dari filsafat. Atau sebaliknya, karena kita ingin memahami hidup manusia dengan pemahaman yang lebih kaya, maka kita tekadkan untuk bertamasya menempuh jalan filsafat. Filsafat Pekerjaan Sosial
Ya, filsafat memang luas, agak rumit dan eksotis, dia memiliki akar yang dalam, tentu saja kita juga tidak dapat mengelak dari sejarah bahwa filsafat adalah induk dari segala ilmu. Ilmu adalah lentera penerang kehidupan. Barang siapa yang ingin kebenaran, maka dia harus menempuh jalan ilmu, barang siapa ingin bahagia maka harus dengan ilmu. Barang siapa ingin sejahtera maka haruslah dengan ilmu. Salah satunya adalah Ilmu Kesejahteraan Sosial.
Tetapi ilmu tidak terlahir begitu saja, dia datang melalui percik permenungan dan pemecahan berkelanjutan atas pertanyaan-pertanyaan mendasar yang ditujukan pada satu atau bahkan berbagai persoalan. Selanjutnya lebih jauh lagi, kemudian dipertanyakan secara mengakar dan kritis. Itulah cara filsafat yang kemudian melahirkan landasan epistemologis suatu ilmu.
Ilmu Kesejahteraan Sosial berbeda dari kebanyakan ilmu yang lain, dia adalah ilmu terapan yang juga bersifat ilmu interdisipliner. Sebagai ilmu terapan, Ilmu Kesejahteraan Sosial memiliki tiga pilar utama, yaitu pilar pengatahuan keilmuan (body of Knowledge), pilar keterampilan (body of skill) dan pilar nilai, kode etik (body of values). Ketiganya harus dibangun sama kuat, karena itu dalam rangka memperkuat pemahaman ke tiga pilar tersebut, maka bagi mahasiswa Ilmu Kesejahteran Sosial, sebagai pondasi awal, seyogyanya mereka dapat memahami filosofi daripada keilmuannya dan Filsafat Pekerjaan Sosial
Pada saat Ilmu Kesejahteraan Sosial dipraktekkan sebagai sebuah bentuk aksiologi. bentuk nilai dan manfaat dari Ilmu Kesejahteraan Sosial tersebut, dia dikenal dengan praktek pekerjaan sosial (Social Work) hingga pembangunan sosial (Social Development) – yang melekat di dalamnya nilai-nilai dan etika — yang menjadikan Ilmu Kesejahteraan Sosial sebagai landasan epistemologinya.
