BERDEBAR [ • ] Hi, Curious People! Maudy Ayunda here. Welcome to my booklist, where I’ll be sharing 3 interesting insights from the books I’ve read. Today, we’ll dissect one of my favorite book. Educated. A memoir written by Tara Westover, an author from Idaho, United States. As a teaser, the story is very unique.
The writer had only set foot the first time in a classroom when she was 17 years old due to her childhood that’s filled with extreme limitations from the belief of her parents and community that forbids hers from going to school.
Well in this book, the writer tells about her journey in opening her mindset, looking at a new world, chasing freedom, and building a new identity as an individual. And finally, she can went to prestigious universities like Harvard, Cambridge, and become a bestselling author. Now for the insights! Insight 1:
The Importance of Curiosity. Tara Westover grew up up in a non-typical and quite extreme family, compared to the common household. Her parents do not believe in formal education, government institutions, or even doctors. That’s why, during childhood Tara and her siblings were very much confined from the outside world.
They didn’t get to play with the other kids, couldn’t go to a doctor when they get hurt or sick, and their lives are completely controlled by the doctrines and beliefs of their families. Because of this, the writer often received physical and mental abuse and many other extreme difficulties
That is not normal for a child of her age. With this closed and controlled life, how come Tara was able to find a way out, get into some well-known schools in the world and in the end, become a bestselling author? What I see is that, Tara’s journey starts with her big curiosity.
As a reader, I can clearly see that Tara was quite different when she was a kid. She always believes that life is more than what she knew at that time. It is the will and courage to find out that in the end takes her out of her comfort zone,
Oppose all the limitations from her family, and build a new life. Even though the process is very bitter. Inisght No.2: Our inner voice is ought to be listened There’s a quote that’s super cool from the book, “My life was narrated for me by others their voices were forceful, emphatic, absolute.
It had never occurred to me that my voice might be as strong as theirs. Which means (in Indonesian) “Hidupku selama ini dinarasikan orang lain. Suara-suara mereka tegas, lantang, dan absolut. Tidak pernah terpikirkan olehku bahwa suaraku bisa sekuat suara mereka.” Tara’s childhood was full with doctrines and controls
That makes her lost herself and her potentials. But, as Tara chase an access to the outside world she gained knowledge and was encouraged to think even more critically. From this process, Tara can finally finds her voice, developed her own independent thoughts and made her own decisions in the end.
So, when we’re faced with loud opinions from people around us, don’t forget to also listen to our own voice. Because we have the freedom to choose which path we want to take and our life is ours. Tara was able to listen to her heart and make her speaks louder
And in the end brought a very transformative impact to her life. And there’s another quote that I really like, that makes me think, “How often do we seek validation and approval from others without giving consideration to the idea that we are capable and talented enough to shape our own path?”

One of the thing that I remember from this book is that how important education is as a source of enlightment, change and freedom. The writer always says that education is a self-creation, proses kreasi diri (Indonesian), self-development process. For example, from every information and knowledge that Tara gained
When she was finally in school, Tara gets to realize that “This world is not actually black and white but full of dynamic range of colors.” That’s the point when she started to ask questions about all the perspectives that have been planted to her since she was a child rework everything
And chose her own principles or even stance that she wanted to apply to her life. She begins to create and build her own self. And not just that, but I think, this tory also shows that having independence in thinking is also a process of empowerment for Tara.
From education, Tara gains freedom. Freedom to think. Freedom to act. Freedom to be. And that’s why education is so important. And now, so what? Actually this book is very difficult to only be divided into 3 insights, because there are a lot of complexities in this book
That need a longer and more detailed explanations. So I really recommend for you guys to read the book yourself, because the book is full with images and stories with a type of complexity that… Oh my, super cool! And cannot be fully appreciated if you don’t read it yourself.
And I clearly remember, when I was reading it, I even thought “ Is this fiction or is it real?” Because I was quite taken aback while reading the stories, and I was also very touched ad very inspiried by Tara’s struggle in opening her mindset and develop herself

Finally getting around to Educated by Tara Westover – salah satu buku yang udah sering banget di request sama Curious People! Buku ini bener-bener membuka pikiranku dan aku sangat terinspirasi sama kegigihan dan semangat Tara dalam perjuangannya mendapatkan akses ke pendidikan. I really recommend you guys to read the book yourselves karena masih banyak pelajaran-pelajaran berharga lainnya.

Kehidupanku di kampung masih sangat melekat dg pemikiran "sekolah tinggi² paling ya balik kampung lagi". Sempet mau putus sekolah waktu SMP karena ga mau jadi beban keluarga. Dan memang hanya mampu sekolah sampai SMP. Satu-satunya murid di kelas yang tak bisa melanjutkan SMA. Tapi karena semangat belajar yg tinggi, 3 tahun setelah lulus SMP, akhirnya mendaftarkan diri di kejar paket C. Tiap pagi kerja serabutan. Entah nyuci mobil, ke sawah, atau angon kambing milik orang dll. Semuanya tak lakukan demi ngumpulin pundi-pundi rupiah demi bayar sekolah. Walaupun sekolahnya cuma 1 jam dan seminggu 3x tidak membuatku kendor dalam belajar. Alhamdulillah bisa setara orang-orang walaupun cuma paket C. Dan di usia 29 tahun ketrima di kampus swasta dg ijazah paket C. Satu-satunya yg lulusan paket C. Makin kesini makin sadar kalo saya tak sekolah bagaimana jalan-jalan itu bisa terbuka. Semangat semuanya yg sedang meraih mimpi. Doakan aku supaya bisa dapat beasiswa S2. Syukur bisa dapat di luar negeri. Aamiin
si Penulis mulai sekolah umur 17 tahun, sementara diriku merasa minder dan sangat terlambat karena belum S2 di usia 26 tahun (dimana banyak orang2 sekitar ku yg mengejar2 hal itu). Sangat memotivasi kalau tidak ada kata terlambat.
PENDIDIKAN MEMANG DAPAT MERUBAH SEGALANYA BAIK DIRI SENDIRI, LINGKUNGAN BAHKAN NEGARA….SUKSES SELALU

sangat rekomended buku ini, betapa masih sangat struggle perjuangan untuk dapat pendidikan bukan hanya dari hambatan eksternal tapi dari "stereotipe ayah kandung" sendiri, yang tidak percaya pada pemerintah. tapi seorang Tara yang benar-benar berupaya mendapatkan akses pendidikan, meskipun berbagai hal untuk menutup akses ke pendidikan dilakukan oleh ayahnya, bahkan 3 kaka kandungnya yg terlebih dahulu bersekolah, justru di berhentikan oleh ayahnya karena muncul pandangan yang katanya mendapat petunjuk Tuhan dan tidak mempercayai pendidikan yang diselenggarakan sama pemerintah. bahkan mamanya Tara, yang sakit akibat kecelakan, sampai muncul benjolan di tengah jidat, tapi ayahnya bersikukuh tidak mau membawanya ke dokter, karena menurutnya, dokter hanya akan membunuh dengan resep obatnya
my mother educated, thank you banget loh buat next list booknya, education banget, yah cerita aja ini yah, aku itu emang dulu apa-apa di doktrin banget sama keluarga kaya i dont have time to explore what i want do, jadi aku kaya ngikut alur kemauan orang tua aja, yah walaupun beda sama taraa yang dia di dokrinnya sampai banget, yah aku sekarang toxic banget sama keluarga, about hubungannya soalnya aku kaya lebih milih mondok di sma ini karena biar bisa do anything what i do sekalian menekunkan soal agama, dan kaya sekarang lebih do it what i want do, yah maish harus dengan persetujuan mereka but, kaya kadang aku lebih memaksakan diri buat do it sendiri karena i know kalo aku izin terlebih dahulu, not the answer, pasti jawabannya ga boleh, dan akhirnya buat planning aku kuliahnya nanti mau do it ke keluar kota, huhh berat memang, tapi yah kalo ga gitu, kayanya emang hitam putih banget nih dunia, makasih yah my mother educated, huhuhu
